Introduction

By Jim Owens

The Survivorship Net is a story that gives a hopeful message to a child whose parent has cancer. It was born one evening with an innocent question from a four-year old boy: "Daddy what's a Brain Tumor? My wife Barb and I had not intentionally avoided discussing my cancer diagnosis with our son Max but had never really sat down to talk about it. We started to look for books or other resources that could help us give him the information he needed to have while offering a hopeful message. Our search yielded mostly books that were detailed, dry and clinical and without a hopeful message that we in our hearts believed was the reality and was the message we wanted to convey. The book draws on our experiences and weaving in the story of a circus that becomes run down as an analogy to the cancer journey we have experienced.

It is a beautifully illustrated book and a very engaging story for children and families. Reading it as a family is a good way to begin the discussion about the cancer journey. It truly is a journey full of hope and possibility. We are actively searching for a publisher. If you or someone you know may be able to help us get our story published please contact me.
